Simon Cowell- Music Supremo, or Self Indulgent Ego?

With the recent news of 'secret handshake deals' which includes a talented group called The Mend who looked set to take the upcoming series of X Factor by storm being booted from the show to keep himself from being seen to be 'fixing' his shows, I have to ask the question.... is he really a master at unearthing 'hidden gems' from amongst us hard working folk, or does he need to be spoon fed the next big thing from people who can really spot talent on a daily basis?

Simon Cowell has, with the aid of his many shows claimed to be trying to unearth talent from the very people who watch his shows and put fuel into his many flash cars by voting on said shows. While we do feel that we have overall control as the 'great british public' whom he so often professes to have complete trust in, is it just that he has positioned pre determined acts to succeed, with only tunnel visioned £ signs in his eyes.

Lets examine the evidence, and the now rapidly mounting claims to support this.

Leona Lewis- no one can dispute the fact this girl can really sing! however she had an album released years before he first stint on the show, which was later pulled, and was also groomed in the Brit School. Was this to allow for the illusion that she was unearthed by Simon and the show.

Ronan Park- The recent front runner for the last series of Britains Got Talent, came an eventual 2nd due to the much publicised rumours of him being 'signed' by Simon years earlier.

Katie Waissel- A finalist from the last series of X Factor, was dogged by rumours of a previous meeting with Simon, which led to release of photographs of previous promotional stills, and 'unheard' material, when she was knows as 'Katie Vogel'

Another aspect to consider is the 'winners' of his shows.

Joe McElderry & Leon Jackson - when Leon Jackson won in 2007 it was admittedly a major surprise as it seemed that Rhydian would clinch it at one stage. Since winning it Leon was given dire promotion of his debut album and was swiftly dropped after a Number 2 single, and Top 5 album. Whilst Rhydian has been quietly releasing albums and none have reached the heights of the top 5. I gave alot of respect for Dannii Minogue but was she brought in as a vote winner as a new face on his show to feed the illusion of that we are really in control?
Similarly Joe McElderry won in 2009, and also recieved dire promotion from the show and its executives, whilst Simon pumped so much into runner up Olly Murs, who was invited back to perform his second single on the show, and is steadily selling a few albums and is now the host of the Xtra Factor, and had previously 'dipped his foot in the industry prior to his appearance' whilst Joe was dropped within 4 months of the release of his own material. Was Olly already offered to Simon for him to consider and groomed for stardom, before we first saw him. and yet again was Cheryl Cole another popular face brought in to get her supporters behind a contestant to make it appear that Simon's predetermined favourite didn't run away with the show and to continue to feed the illusion?

Alexandra Burke- when Alexandra won in 2008 under new show mentor Cheryl Cole it seemed the right winner was chosen, and a string of ensuing Number 1's and top 10 singles followed, it seemed that we had SyCo etc getting right behind her, whilst once again JLS who finished 2nd on the show, have been promoted to the point that they now eclipse her, with Dolls, Movies and even their own range of condoms, meanwhile recently Alexandra has 'left' Syco, and Alexandra has always had to fight for recognition and is now already disappearing from the limelight while JLS seem to be going from strength to strength. Yet another case of a fresh faced judge and their fans being manipulated into voting for someone to make it a competition rather than a procession.

Will Young - Now the most vocal of the contestants about how difficult he found it after he won. Simon seemingly had already decided that Gareth Gates was his winner of Pop Idol, and after the show finished once again pumped millions into promoting Gareth, even engineering it so that his singles were to knock Will Young's off the Number 1 spot in the following week of it getting there. If it wasn't for the public's adoration of Will Young as a person and his obvious talent, and a record breaking million selling debut single off the back of the show, he would have surely been binned by the powers that be, and even after this he had to work so hard to forge a career of his own in the face of the manufactured Gareth Gates, even though Will had won the show.

These questions of course are very open to interpretation and could be debated for a long time. However further recent developments have to be considered.

Cheryl Cole & Dannii Minogue- while Cheryl seemed to be destined for stardom on the new X Factor USA, and was enjoying life over there trying to forge a career for herself, it has been widely reported that it was all a publicity stunt, did Simon Cowell use Cheryl as a pawn to further his own gain to get people to talk about his new show, because he was initially expecting the show to 'walk it' in the States, however didn't get quite his own way with the endearing popularity of 'American Idol' and also 'The Voice', and used Cheryl as a tool to draw the attention back to his show. There must be a reason as to the bad feeling between Cheryl and Simon.
On the topic of Dannii Minogue, despite being the reigning Judges champion cited a 'scheduling issue' as to why she left the show, but even her harshest critic Sharon Osbourne has recently claimed that she was 'thrown from the X Factor'. was Dannii becoming more critical of the behind the scenes operation, and bundled on her way.

Simon seemingly has constructed a team on the X Factor that will be grateful for the career boost they will get, with even talk of Tulisa's band 'N Dubz' apparently ready to split due to her work on the show (http://www.mtv.co.uk/artists/n-dubz/news/x-factor-split). With the exception of Gary Barlow it seems, who has always been a strong willed individual. I do feel however Louis Walsh is still on the panel as Simon's right hand man to give the new judges a gentle poke to remind them of the way a certain Mr Cowell wants the show to be engineered.

On the subject of the The Mend, once again i feel that they will be losing out on Simon's usual technique because of his new flagship show in the States, and he is aware that the press over there will chew him up and will have no quarms about doing so, if they get a whiff of a rigged contest, and has tried to distance himself from this at the earliest opportunity, and has cost a really talented band their deserved chance at a shot to protect his own ego, which is entirely wrong and against what he claimed to set out to do.

Of course this is only speculation, and to me the questions and points I have raised here should at least raise an eyebrow or two.

However, all isn't bad, I have had the opportunity of watching some of this years talent and have to say, it can be done, it will take hard work, and to some it can be the only way to realise dreams, but it has to be a major case of POWER TO THE PEOPLE! and don't be brainwashed.

Cher Lloyd shows that there is life after X Factor.

After her run to the final five on 'X Factor' last year, Cher Lloyd is currently in the process of dropping her debut single 'Swagger Jagger'.

In a recent interview she let slip about her 'rocky' to say the least friendship with former mentor Cheryl Cole, and also how she is still in regular contact with Simon Cowell.

Lets rewind about 9 months ago to when Cher Lloyd first hit our screens on the X Factor, with a brilliant first audition of 'Turn My Swag On' which made the world sit up and take notice, a string of strong performances throughout the show ensured she made the Top 5.

Back to present day most of the other contestants have had their 'fame card' recalled by now. However Cher has been hard at work on her debut album which is due for release any day now, with rumoured collaborations with Busta Rhymes, RedOne and many others, and debut single 'Swagger Jagger' now beginning to eat up the airwaves.

What can we expect from the 'brat' from Malvern? I hope she releases some original material, and can see her being in the same vein of Nikki Minaj and Jessie J.

On the subject of Jessie J, it is rumoured that Cher will be supporting Jessie J on her upcoming tour of the UK, which was a subject Cher couldn't deny or confirm yesterday during her interview on Scott Mills' Radio 1 show.

I expect big things from this girl, and for her to step up and show us something different like she did on the X Factor almost a year ago, and for the world to take note of her once again.

'The X Factor' goes Stateside

Well the wait is almost over! Simon Cowell is now set to launch the 'X Factor' juggernaut on a highly anticipating American audience. It begs the question though, will this be Simon Cowell's finest hour, or will the tides begin to turn against TV reality shows.
Undoubtedly Simon Cowell has scored enormous success and built up a massive global media empire under both the 'idol' 'got talent' and 'x factor' formats, and unearthed some truly global superstars in the likes of Leona Lewis, Susan Boyle, Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, JLS.
However for every Leona Lewis there is a Steve Brookstein. Will this be the same with his new show?

The benchmark to judge how the show is going to fare is the 'old lady' of American talent shows 'American Idol'. Of course Cowell is partly repsonsible for the shows enduring success (as executive producer), after he took a back seat from front line judging on the show, it is now in its 10th season. However despite an new influx of high profile judges in Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler, it has depsite warm reception so far has failed to ingite the viewing figures and continues its recent slump down the figures.

So the questions remains, what exactly can Cowell and the X Factor USA bring that is fresh and exciting to the American table?

Well firstly there is the different format, in that the judges themselves will be taking a more proactive role in the mentoring of the acts. There is also the fact that it no longer features just solo singers- as we have Girls, Boys, Groups and the over 28's categories. This of course us UK viewers are already aware of.
Plus there is now a bumper prize for the winner of the show in the form of a $5,000,000 recording contract- which is a record as the biggest prize on any TV show in the world versus the £1,000,000 UK winners can expect to recieve.

The key however to the shows success is the pulling power of the people he invites to join him on the panel. Many names so far have being flying around. Simon himself is the only confirmed member of the panel so far, but who will be joining him?

Cheryl Cole is the likely choice of the current UK judges to follow Simon over the pond and grab a seat on the panel. Already reported to have signed a $10,000,000 contract to join the panel, Cheryl seems already set to join simon as she has recently been seen looking at potential apartments in the area close the studio where the series will be filmed and broadcast from. Cheryl has broad appeal already across the UK and this potential move will fit in very well with her plans to launch her solo career in America. However problems may arise with her Geordie accent and being easy to understand.

Mariah Carey is a name that is being floated about also, Mariah would be a massive coup for long time admirer Cowell, and would be the Stellar name that he would be looking for in order to launch the show on a major platform. However with her being due to give birth to twins around the time that the auditions are beginning it raises major doubts as to whether she will be there for the jambouree.

Nicole Sherzinger after her popular stint as a guest judge filling in for Dannii Minogue on the UK version of the show seems a very apt shoo-in onto the panel. However she seems more likely to be heading for Cheryl Cole's vacant spot on the UK panel.

Similar with Katy Perry, after her stint on the UK version of the show seems like a good potential choice for the panel, and along with Nicole Sherzinger seems more likely to be UK bound.

Of course only time will tell whether Simon Cowell hits the right note with this show in the states, it has the potential to be spectacular and successful, but in equal measures it could also be a monstrous disaster.

I personally feel that this will be a huge success, and put the final nail in the coffin of 'American Idol' but dont expect it to last as long as 'Idol'

I personally cannot get enough of the X Factor and cannot wait for a second helping of the show in the year. Roll on Summer 2011.

Here we will examine each ladies head-to-head, to see whether or not either one of these distinctive and definitive ladies will be able to land a knock out blow to the other, and see of the challenge and lay claim to the crown.

UK Midweek Singles Update

Here is the current Midweek sales so far in the UK.

1. Chipmunk feat. Chris Brown- 'Champion'
Chipmunk looks set for his second chart topper by teaming up with Chris Brown on this gem of a song. Deserved Chart topper this one.

Verdict- Should stay comfortably on course for No1 this Sunday.

2. Jessie J feat. B.o.B- 'Price Tag'
Last weeks number 1 from the highly hyped Jessie J looks likely to surrender its crown after just one week.

Verdict- comfortable No2 this Sunday

3. Bruno Mars- 'Grenade'
Former chart topper Grenade will continue its slow slide- much alike its predesessor 'Just The Way You Are'- down the countdown.

Verdict- will slide again this week, but i think we may see this climb a place or two in the next few weeks.

4. Adele- 'Rolling In The Deep'
I feel that this song has had its best chance now to top the charts. This will also continue its slow descent from the chart.

Verdict- May end up much lower by Sunday, but i'm sure Adele isn't too dishearted as she should chalk up a third week at No1 in the Album charts on Sunday.

5. Ke$ha- 'We R Who We R'
Ke$ha's former Number 1 will endure a nose dive in sales again this week, as it gets squeezed by alot of the more established songs around it.

Verdict- No5 is a bit optimistic, should be lower end of the Top 10 by Sunday.

So there are the current top 5 standings in the Singles Chart. Here is some updates on some key songs on the chart that are hanging around the Top 5 and where we can expect them to land on Sunday.

8. Taio Cruz ft. Kylie Minogue 'Higher'
11. Pink 'F**king Perfect'
13. Rihanna 'S & M'

Chart Predictions UK Top 5 Singles

This week expect big new enteries from X Factor judge Cheryl Cole and barbadan beauty Rihanna. Will either of them depose Bruno Mars from the top spot, which he impressively reclaimed last week. Well here is how I think the UK Top 5 will look on Sunday evening.

NEW ENTRY

Cheryl Cole - 'Promise This'

The lead single from new album 'Messy Little Raindrops' and a showstopping performance on the X Factor, should see this catchy little number return Ms. Cole to the Number 1 spot.

2

Bruno Mars- 'Just The Way You Are'

Consistent selling song from Bruno Mars will sell well again this week, it may lose the Number 1 spot this week, but should sell more than enough to see it hold onto Number 2.

3

The Wanted- 'Heart Vacancy'

The boys second single with its impressive debut at Number 2 last week will slide a little this week but should hold onto a Top 3 spot come Sunday.

4 NEW ENTRY

Rihanna- 'Only Girl In The World'

The first single from 'Ri-Ri's' fifth studio album 'Loud' should debut strongly in this weekend's countdown. However expect to see it challenge Cheryl Cole for Number 1 next week after her much awaited appearance on this Sunday's X Factor results show.

5 High Climber

Mike Posner 'Cooler Than Me'

The hottest track on the countdown right now, should claim its rightful place in the Top 5 this week. I feel even though this song will be around for a long time, given the new releases coming in the next few weeks Number 5 may end up as high as this track reaches, which is a shame as it has Number 1 written all over it.

Hit & Miss 1st November 2010

Its time to review some of the new songs available to download and buy next week.

Nadine Coyle - 'Insatiable'
1st November

The much delayed first solo release from 'The Voice'
of Girls Aloud. with obvious undertones of 2007
smash hit Umbrella by Rihanna/ Jay Z. Great vocals
on display in this, should do well but won't be able
to compete with the promotion from among others
bandmate Cheryl Cole and The X Factor juggernaut.

PREDICTION- UK Top 10
VERDICT- HIT

Ne-Yo - 'One In A Million'
1st November

Hot on the heels of uptempo chart topping
'Monster', Ne-Yo lends his silky smooth
vocals to this catchy number. With the cold
nights drawing in this song is a real
Winter warmer and should chart well,
however it doesnt scream like an instant
smash, would say its more of a creeper hit,
but should debut solidly.

PREDICTION- UK Top 3
VERDICT- HIT

Will.i.am & Nicki Minaj -'Check It Out'
1st November
Another month, another appearance from Nicki
Minaj, this time with will.i.am. Already scaling the
Billboard charts in the U.S. This takes a few
listens to bed in but when it does all becomes
clear. A real crowd pleaser at the right time
for many Christmas party playlists. And with
a sample of the Buggles 'Video Killed The Radio
Star' thrown in for good measure, you can't go
far wrong with this track.

PREDICTION- UK Top 3
VERDICT- HIT

Roll Deep feat. Alesha Dixon - 'Take Control'
1st November

following their 2005 debut to moderate success
Roll Deep are having a phenomenal year so far
coming off the back of two Number 1's this year,
they enlist the help of Strictly Come Dancing vixen
Alesha Dixon. However this song lacks a few things
firstly originality as it sounds more like an album
filler and finally the killer hook that is apparent in
their last two efforts. I fear not even Alesha
can help this song foxtrot its way to the top spot.

PREDICTION- UK Top 10
VERDICT - MISS

So having seen the top draw songs available next week, lets see what other songs are available on general download and release.

Alexis Jordan - Happiness
American singer Alexis makes her first major UK release with this song. Despite much hype and promise in the US don't expect anything special from this.
Prediction- Top 75 MISS

Ellie Golding - Lights
Ellie's amazing vocals and harmonic sound raidiates throughout this little gem of a track, the third from her same-titled debut album.
Prediction- Top 20 HIT

Jamiroquai - Blue Skies
A hearty welcome back to a british institution in the shape of Jay Kay and Jamiroquai. With a video reminiscent of Robbie Williams and Bodies last year, this laid back, relaxed evening song, will make a mild impression on the chart upon release, and is a sweet enough song, but more importantly its good to have you back.
Prediction- Top 20 HIT

Linkin' Park - Waiting For The End,
I have listened to this song a few times now, and im still none the wiser about the inspiration for this song. It's such a drastic change of musical theme and style from Linkin' Park that I still have to check the name to make sure it is them. Sometime change is good. On this occasion however the title of the track takes on a deeper significance- it sounds like we are hearing the end of this group.
Prediction- Top 40 BIG MISS

check back next week for another review of the main tracks available to own from next week, with my thoughts and eventual chart position predictions and verdicts on them.
